I can keep on the way I have been, but it's honestly draining to write a 7k fic and receive three comments and immediately disappear back into obscurity. I convinced myself for so long that creation was its own merit, but art can't exist in a vacuum, you know?
Gah, I can relate to this so much! In the past I wrote a lot of m/m slash fic, and it's so much more popular than anything I write now. It sometimes frustrates me that my own mediocre fics get so much more recognition than the fic I write now, which I feel is better. I don't usually write women of colour, but I'm sure that WOC pairings get ignored even more than white femslash pairings. Fandom is really fucked up. I try not to focus too much on fic any more, and put more energy / time into other kinds of writing, because I think it's more personally satisfying. The fic I do write is incredibly self-indulgent, it's really just to make me happy, so it's become something relaxing. I miss when fic felt so exciting and vibrant to me.
